Free Swimming

WELCOME FOR FREE SWIMMING FOR YOUNG AND OLD

Scunthorpe MP, Elliot Morley, has welcomed the introduction of free swimming in all North Lincs facilities for those under 16 and over 60. This is a government scheme in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council who have contributed to the cost. It comes into effect today.

Mr Morley said, ‘Swimming is one of the easiest and best ways of keeping fit and North Lincs runs some excellent facilities for people to enjoy. This is a scheme designed to help our young and old in particular and with the Easter holidays coming this will be a great opportunity for youngsters to get down to the pool. It’s also the case that many retired people are increasingly active and health conscious and this is another facility the government has made available to pensioners.’

Mr. Morley made a particular point of congratulating North Lincs council for their support as they are the only council in the former Humberside area to offer free swimming to both the young and old. Lib Dem controlled Hull has not taken the money on offer, not has Tory controlled east Riding, Lib Dem NE Lincs has only offered a restricted version.

He said, ‘North Lincs under Labour has a reputation of good management and keeping council tax down while offering the best services in this region. This new facility continues that tradition and I congratulate the council for their positive partnership with the government in offering this new concession.

Note to editors.

Time restrictions may apply at peak periods. See North Lincs press release for details. Epworth Leisure centre is not a council facility but North Lincs has provided a special grant to allow them to participate in the scheme.
